Meghalaya prepared to host 2022 National Games: CM

Meghalaya chief minister Conrad Sangma on Sunday said that the state government is fully prepared to host the 39th National Games in 2022.

“Land has been finalized and earmarked for development of sports and ancillary infrastructure. Consultants are in place for the development of stadium designs and plans,” he said in his Republic Day address at Polo ground here.

“We will start the process of construction in the next three months. I can assure all of you that this government is fully prepared to host an impressive National Games in 2022, that will make all of us proud,” the Chief Minister said.

The National Games will be held at Shillong and Tura. The competition venues for the different sports have been finalised in consultation with the various sports associations and the Meghalaya State Olympic Association.

Rs. 200 crore has been cleared by Expenditure Finance Committee for the main stadium at Umsawli, however, the final clearance of the Union Cabinet is awaited, said Sangma.

He said another Rs 125 crore has been sanctioned by the Ministry of Minority Affairs for creation of sports infrastructure at West Garo Hills. The Ministry of Tribal Affairs has sanctioned Rs.20 crore for construction of Indoor Stadium at Shillong.

“In total, we have got commitments for investments of upto Rs.440 crore for building National Games infrastructure,” Sangma said.
