 INTRODUCTION: Implementation of ‘POSHAN Abhiyaan’ in Nagaland is bringing about tangible social health behavioural change in the State. Social Welfare department,as the nodal department along with convergent departments is playing a key role since its launch in the month of March 2018 in this process of social health transformation. Nagaland is rated as one of the better performing States at the National level in regard to implementation of POSHAN Abhiyaan, currently it is ranked 4th in the country. 

A  State Project Management Unit under Department of Social Welfare has been set up to manage the affairs of POSHAN Abhiyaan in Nagaland. It  is headed by a Project Director - Joint Secretary ranked Officer of the Social Welfare Department. Every district and block has POSHAN coordinators and Assistant coordinators for overseeing the implementation. To bring about convergence of all nutrition related schemes a Convergence Committee has been placed at State, District & Block level. At the State Level it is head by Chief Secretary, in the District by Deputy Commissioner and in the Block by Sub-Divisional Officer.

The Objective of the mission are:

1. Prevent & reduce Stunting in children (0-6 years).

2. Prevent & reduce undernutrition in children (0-6 years).

3. Prevent & reduce Anemia amongst young children (6-59 months).

4. Reduce the prevalence of Anemia among women and adolescent girls (15-49 years).

5. Reduce Low Birth Weight (LBW).

POSHAN Abhiyaan was first launched in Tuensang and Kiphire district in Nagaland on the 8th of March 2018.The remaining districts were taken up during the next two phase subsequently.


1. Smartphones  has  been provided to all the 3980 Anganwadi Workers throughout the state.
2. All 3980 Anganwadi Centres has been provided with Growth monitoring devices  namely, Infantometer, Stadiometer, Weighing scale (Infant) & Weighing scales(Mother & Child). This devices enables monitoring of under-nutrition, stunting & wasting.
3. Two (2) community based events (CBE) are being organised at every Anganwadi Centers every month. 
4. Village Health, Sanitation & Nutrition Day (VHSND).
5. Home-visits is done regularly by the Anganwadi Worker alongwith ANM/ASHA to monitor the health of mother and the child and to spread the message of good nutrition.
6. Capacity enhancement of the field level workers are being done through Incremental Learning Approach training .So far they are being trained on 19 Modules related to care of women & child health and nutrition.
7. Along with the rest of the country Poshan Maah(month) was celebrated in September 2019.
8. Awardees at State and National Level.
POSHAN Pakhwada is being celebrated across the State from 8th to 22nd March 2020. All the convergent Departments to play a key role for implementing various activities during the Pakhwada as was done during POSHANMaah. Major activities planned includes…
1. Panchayat meetings on importance of nutrition and Curbing single use of plastics
3. Demonstration of Handwashing in schools & Anganwadi Centres
4. Youth Leaders Meeting including Church Youth Leaders
5. Awareness camps for adolescent girls
6. CBE-Suposhan Diwas
7. School based activities-display of posters banners in all tribal schools and sensitization of school children of the importance of general hygiene hand washing before eating
8. Mothers’ meeting: Focus mothers in law and young mother
9. Organising mothers kitchen – formulate recipes out of locally available vegetables and cereals and other edibles having high nutritive value and consumed by people in the State 
10. POSHAN walk / Seminars with SHG members – Sensitisation on Health and Nutrition
11. Local Leaders Meeting: NGOs / Politicians/ Youth Leaders
12. Cleanliness drive in Government Offices, Educational Institutions & Anganwadi Centres.
Further IEC activities through mass media, mid media and Social Media will be carried out during POSHANPakhwada. Events can be uploaded on Social Media Campaign Hashtag #Poshan Pakhwada & #poshanabhiyaanfor maximum reach. During Poshan Pakhwada awareness on nutrition in urban area will also be focused.  The Jan Andolan Guidelines which are Multi Sectorial and cover 12 basic themes are to be utilised to activate various platforms at ground level.

3. Optimal breastfeeding
4. Complementary food and feeding
5. Full immunization & vitamin A supplementation
6. Growth monitoring and promotion
7. Anaemia prevention in children, adolescent girls and women – diet, IFA, deworming
8. Food fortification and micronutrients
9. Diarrhoea Management
10. Girls education, diet and right age at marriage
11. Hygiene, Sanitation & Safe drinking water
12. Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE)
The Jan Andolan Dashboard at website will have a separate tab to reflect aggregated outcomes of the POSHANPakhwada. Entry of all activities will be made on periodical basis at block level. Previously, POSHANMAAH had garnered 25 crore participation across 22 lakh activities across the country.
