After a video of brutal physical assault surfaced on Friday showing 35 to 40 men mercilessly beating three-four men in Haryana’s Gurugram, police said they have arrested six men.

A case was registered against the bunch for attempt to murder at the Bhondi police station, Shamsher Singh, the ACP of Gurugram police said.

“We have video grabs of the incident and efforts are on to identify the other accused,” Singh added.

The victims belong to the minority community. They were playing cricket outside their residence in Bhup Singh Nagar around 5 p.m. on Thursday (on the day of Holi), when the attack took place, the officer said.

“As per the statement given by one of the victims named Shahid, the attackers in a drunken state had first ordered them to stop playing cricket on the street.

“This was followed by a heated exchange of words, which led to the final assault, when the attackers bearing batons, swords, iron rods, hockey sticks, and water pipes beat them up,” Shamsher Singh said.

The attackers had even followed the victims inside a house as they tried to save themselves. They beat the foursome black and blue, in fact Shahid had collapsed, the First Information Report said.

A mob had also pelted stones at the house.

The entire incident was filmed by one of the victims. The attackers did not show any mercy even after the victims’ family members pleaded with them.

One of the victims’ kin Mohamad Shamshad has complained that police did not come to their rescue, when they dialled 100.

Communal tension in Gurugram

Following the attack on a family belonging to a particular community in Gurugram’s Bhup Singh Nagar under the Bhondsi Police Station on the day of Holi, the area continued to be tense on Saturday.

A large number of people assembled outside the house of Mohamad Shamshad, the victim, on Saturday.

According to Himanshu Garg, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), South District, the two parties had angry exchanges after a cricket ball allegedly hit one person.

“Following that a large numbers of drunken men attacked the house of the victim and beat the family members with batons, iron rods, water pipes and hockey sticks. They beat four persons until one of them, identified as Shahid, became unconscious. All the four have suffered head injuries,” Garg said.

As per reports, the family members were also told to go to Pakistan.

The police first rounded up six people on the basis of video footage, shot by one family member, but five of them were released later. One person, identified as Mahesh Kumar, was arrested.

During the attack, some persons barged inside the house while others pelted stones from outside. The attackers kept thrashing victims even as the family members, including women, pleaded for mercy.

“A case has been filed under Sections 149, 307, 323, 427, 452 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code against unknown persons at the Bhondsi Police Station. We are in the process of identifying the accused,” Garg said.

“A Police Control Room (PCR) van has been stationed outside the victim’s house. No further violence has been reported from the area,” Garg said.

Meanwhile, the victim’s father Mohamad Shamshad claimed they tried to contact the local police many times, but they didn’t come to their rescue as attackers kept thrashing them for about half-an-hour.
