AIZAWL, MAR 9 (AGENCIES) | Publish Date: 3/9/2019 12:25:54 PM IST

The Mizoram government will set up Lokayukta, an anti-corruption ombudsman, to eradicate corruption in the state, an official of state’s law and judicial department said on Friday. The government has recently appointed Lalsawta, a retired IAS officer as the chairman of the corruption ombudsman. The official said that Lokayukta will be commenced with the swearing of the chairman on March 11. The state governor will administer oath of office to Lalsawta at a swearing-in function to be held at Durbal Hall of Raj Bhavan in Aizawl on Monday, he said.

Law minister TJ Lalnuntluanga had earlier said that CM Zoramthanga gave serious concern about the establishment of Lokayukta as a result of which massive efforts have been taken to meet requirements for the final establishment.

He said that the selection commission headed by CM Zoramthanga had recently appointed Lalsawta to head the ombudsman.

The Mizoram Lokayukta Act was legislated by the state Assembly in 2014, but the establishment of the anti-corruption ombudsman was delayed by Lal Thanhawla-led Congress government due to several reasons. Establishment of Lokayukta was the poll agenda of the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) before the state assembly polls in November last year. The state government has allocated Rs 159. 34 lakh for the establishment of Lokyukta during the fiscal 2017-18.
