Mokokchung police on Friday arrested three persons on the charges of spreading false rumours through social media.

The incident came to light after the video of a minor girl went viral on social media where the minor was being mistreated inappropriately accusing her of being immoral and even to the extent of cutting her hair.

Following the incident, an FIR was lodged at Police Station I Mokokchung on August 23 by three persons, namely Khoni Mongko president Maksha Citizen Union, O. Chingmak president Maksha Union Tuensang Town, L. Hongen G.B Maksha village, Tuensang urging the authorities to immediately investigate the matter and arrest the perpetrators.

In the FIR, the signatories strongly condemned the video stating that it tarnished the image and life of the teenage girl besides the village and the community in general.

The FIR further stated that the girl was staying with her maternal uncle at Alongmen ward Mokokchung from the month of June this year for domestic help. They also stated that the Maksha village community did not find any fault on the girl befitting such a punishment as perpetrated on her in the video.

They also alleged that the physical assault and humiliation meted out to her has damaged the image of the victim and making the video viral was beyond the tolerance of not only their village community but the entire community.

The FIR warned that Maksha villagers should not be held responsible for any untoward incident due to delay/negligence on the part of the concerned authority in this regard.

Meanwhile, PRO Mokokchung police stated that investigations were already initiated soon after they came to know the incident through the social media.

PRO said a case was already registered even before they received any FIR.

Police said two FIRs were lodged-- one from Nagaland Alliance for Women & Children and the other one from the Maksha village authorities.
