Manipur Governor La Ganesan on Wednesday released special postal covers of four unsung heroes of Manipur who sacrificed their lives for the motherland.

The special covers of Thangal General, Bir Tikendrajit, Paona Brajabashi and Haipou Jadonang were released at a simple function hosted by postmaster general, northeast circle at Imphal Raj Bhavan.

In his speech on the occasion, the Governor stressed the need for depicting the portraits of such unsung heroes in the covers of school and college textbooks.

It will help students and the younger generation learn lessons from their lives and the sacrifices they made for the state as well as the nation, he said.

He said that the postmaster general of northeast circle had done a commendable and praiseworthy job by releasing the special postal covers of the four unsung heroes of the state.

“But this is not sufficient. We should try to get it covered in school and college textbooks so that students’ and the younger generation learn lessons from their lives and the sacrifices they made for the state as well as our nation,” he said.

He said that millions of leaders and freedom fighters sacrificed their lives to free India from the clutches of British tyranny.

The struggle which started with the death of Mangal Pandey and great rebellion in 1857 finally ended on August 15th 1947 when India emerged as an independent nation, he recalled.

He added that even in the tiny state of Manipur, people will never forget the sacrifices made by these leaders to uphold the freedom of the country.

“However, amidst our praises for the greatest of the leaders, known and unknown, we often forget the contributions of some unsung heroes.”

“These freedom fighters were as fierce as others and had the courage to stare death in the eyes, and at last dedicated their lives for the cause of Independence,” he said.

He, then, called for paying tribute to these freedom fighters by devoting some time for them.

He expressed his full confidence that the four covers will earn popularity not only in the northeast states but all the states of the country.

The function was attended by Som Kamei, postmaster general, northeast circle, L Tiken Singh, superintendent of post, Manipur and staff from the Imphal post office among others.
