Rotavirus vaccination programme will be launched in Manipur from the second week of June, officials of the state health department said on Friday.
Rotavirus vaccine is to protect against rotavirus infections, which are the leading cause of severe diarrhoea among young children. The vaccines prevent 15–34% of severe diarrhoea in the developing world and 37–96% of severe diarrhoea in the developed world, according to the officials.
Speaking at a two-day workshop on introduction of Rotavirus vaccine in Manipur, director Dr L Rajo of Manipur health services said that training of health officials and workers on vaccination of Rotavirus had already begun in the state.
The vaccine will be provided free of cost and will be made available in all the state run healthcare centre including district hospitals, community health centres, primary health centres and also at the special immunisation centres, he said.
The two-day workshop was organised jointly by State Health Services and State Health Mission under the sponsorship of UNICEF.
Director of state health mission, Dr S Manikanta said that government has a plan to include Rotavirus vaccination programme in the Universal Immunisation Programme in the state.
Health officials said that Rotavirus spreads easily among infants and young children. The virus can cause severe watery diarrhoea, vomiting, fever, and abdominal pain. Good hygiene like hand washing and cleanliness are important, but are not enough to control the spread of the disease. Rotavirus vaccine is the best way to protect your child against rotavirus disease, they added.
The World Health Organization (WHO) also recommended that rotavirus vaccine be included in national routine vaccinations programmes, especially in areas where the disease is common, the officials said.
