Women Congress activists led by Manipur Pradesh Mahila Congress Committee (MPMCC) president Mutum Sharma Devi staged a protest outside Imphal Congress Bhavan here on Thursday against the steep rise in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cylinder prices and demanded immediate rollback.

LPG price was increased to Rs 858.50 per 14.2 kg cylinder from Rs 714 previously, according to a price notification of state-owned oil firms on Wednesday.  This is the steepest hike in rates since January 2014 when prices had gone up by Rs 220 per cylinder to Rs 1,241. Talking to reporters on the sideline of the protest, Sharma Devi said that the protest was  staged as part of nationwide protest organised by All India Mahila Congress. She alleged that the sudden hike in the LPG price will give a big blow to the common people.

She alleged yesterday’s hike was the sixth time the price of the LPG was hiked since August 2019 and threatened that women activists of the party will launch a series of protest against price hike. Slamming BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, Sharma Devi claimed that prices of essential commodities went on to increase since the saffron party came to power in the country.

During the protest, a gas frame with cooking utensils on it and firewood beneath, and an LPG cylinder on the side was displayed besides placards with various slogans against LPG price hike.

“Don’t starve common people,” “We protest LPG price hike”, “Don’t politics on PDS items”, read some of the placards. The women state Congress leader questioned the purpose of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana scheme if the common man cannot afford the LPGs.
