Manipur Democratic Front (MDF) stated on Sunday that unabated incidents of mob violence in Manipur were signs of no good governance in Manipur.

Addressing a news conference, MDF general secretary M Samungou alleged that “if there is  good governance, there will be no incident of mob justice”. One of the main reasons behind people indulging in mob justice was because that they have no faith to the government, he observed.

M Samungou stated that despite the enforcement of Anti-mob Violence Act by the state government, mob violence still occurred in the state. Asking person(s) to surrender through media by various civil society organisations was part of mob justice, he added.

The incumbent N Biren’s BJP-led coalition government enacted ‘The Manipur Protection from Mob Violence Act on December 21, 2018 making Manipur the first state to take a serious step against increasing incidents of mob violence.

Under the Act, offenders of the Act are recommended rigorous life imprisonment for those involved in mob violence which results in the death of a victim. In addition to life imprisonment, the law also recommends a fine of Rs five lakh for those involved in mob lynching.

Perpetrators may also face public humiliation through exclusion from public services and might be forced to leave his/her home without consent.

The Manipur Democratic Front general secretary observed that no one can take law into own hands. Despite knowing this and also keeping in mind the law enacted by the government, people continued to resort to mob justice as they have no faith with the government and no confidence with the police, M Samungou said. Manipur Democratic Front will soon start a wall-poster campaign against mob justice, he added.
