Meghalaya Health and Family Welfare Minister, Alexander Laloo Hek on Thursday said that the Central government has welcomed the offer of the outlawed Hynñiewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) for holding peace talks. “I have met Minister of State for Home G. Kishan Reddy on Wednesday and conveyed to him HNLC’s offer for peace talks with the government,

”Hek said over the phone from Delhi.Reddy has welcomed HNLC’s offer for peace talks and he has informed me that he will take up the matter with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah,” the BJP legislator said. The HNLC, which runs hit-and-run operations from its hideout in Bangladesh, had on December, 2019 said that it was ready for peace talks even within the ambit of the Constitution of India to regain the respect and recognition as a “Nation”. Meghalaya shares a 443 km long border with Bangladesh, part of which is porous, hilly and unfenced and prone to frequent infiltrations. Hek also informed that he has sought an appointment with the Home Minister to submit a letter seeking his intervention to invite the HNLC to the negotiating table to ensure lasting peace in the State. Hek said that the State unit of the BJP was ready to act as facilitator for the HNLC or any other organisation if they wanted to have peace talks with the Government of India under the leadership of Prime Minister, Narendra Modi. Earlier, Meghalaya BJP state president Ernest Mawrie had said the party would help the HNLC leaders if they were willing to meet Union home minister Amit Shah. Mawrie had also said the party wanted the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government, which the BJP is one of the alliance partners, to invite the militant outfit for talks.
