The Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT) has condemned the demand letter issued to the business community of Mokokchung town by a certain Naga Political Group (NPG).

Stating that the matter had shocked citizens of the town and impacted its overall peaceful environment, MTLT declared that it stands in solidarity with Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industries (MCCI), which has taken strong exception to the demand letter and rightly resolved to not give in to the demand by the unspecified NPG.

In a statement, MTLT president Imkummeren Jamir and Social Concern Committee convener Aolong Imchen asserted that such a demand letter asking money to the tune of Rs 10 Lakh was “unreasonable, unacceptable and totally against the growth” of Mokokchung town’s economy. They pointed out that Mokokchung market was relatively small and the business community, whether holding a big or small enterprise, has been sustaining despite challenges faced by a small community.

The Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem claimed that the business community of the town, irrespective of tribe or community, has always been playing an integral role in the development of the town and has taken proactive roles in good and bad times for the welfare of society.

MTLT termed the demand letter as detrimental to the growth of Mokokchung town’s economy and  also against the town’s peaceful environment.

As a major stakeholder of the society, the organisation said it strongly condemns such demand letters that will “lead to nothing but simply strangle the fledging economy of the town”.

Asserting that it will not allow the Mokokchung town market economy to rot under the fear of threats of any kind, MTLT said that as a right-thinking organization, it stands side by side with the business community and will render any physical, moral and logistical support so that such demands do not hamper the progress and wellbeing of the town.

Urging the district administration and police to take cognizance of the developments taking place in the town, the organization also requested government agencies to take strong pragmatic measures to prevent such unwanted activities.

Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem cautioned that such harassments to the business community, who are mostly bona fide citizens of the town, might soon lead to an uncontrollable and untoward incident, which will be most regrettable for all concerned.

It further urged the district administration and law enforcing agencies to take stock of the matter immediately lest the situation spirals out of hand.
