Morality in politics

Except for the Sikkim Democratic Front(SDF), all Rajya Sabha MPs from the north east –based regional political parties voted for the controversial Citizen (Amendment) Bill which has become an Act after the President of India gave assent. There are a few points that come up over the CAB (now CAA) in view of its inherent contradiction with the spirit of the Indian constitution as drafted by the founding fathers. There is also another point that reveals how the MPs from the north east-based regional parties were literally sailing on two boats. The CAB is as highly emotive as the core issue of illegal immigration mostly from Bangladesh. It may be pointed out that the term ‘illegal immigrant’ which has been overused since the late 70s especially at the height of the violent anti-foreigner movement in Assam in the mid-80s, was subjectively applied to mean a particularly religious community. The fear was not misplaced mainly because of the real threat posed by the illegal immigrants on the demography of most of the states. Tripura is a classic and living example of how the illegal immigrants have consistently, persistently and blatantly circumvented the ineffective border protection and weak and inoperable immigration law to swamp the state for many decades. The consequences of the influx has resulted in the local indigenous Tripuris being systematically reduced to minority of only 25% of the population in their own land and state. The ‘illegal immigrants’ turned Indian citizens are mainly Bangladeshi Hindus who constitute 60% of the state’s population at over 20 lakh. Muslims comprise of 8% of the state’s religious community, while Christians make up 4% of the population. For the Hindus of Bangladeshi-origin who are in majority in Tripura, the CAB was a bounty promised by the BJP in granting them Indian citizenship. The recently enacted CAA would inspire more Bangladeshi Hindus to cross over to the north east, which is like the Nazi Lebensraum. The vote bank syndrome which the BJP heavily criticised the Congress is being replicated through the CAA. However, the Congress tried to make amends by incorporating the issue of illegal immigrants in the Assam Accord where those who came to India(read northeast) after March 24,1971 will be treated as illegal immigrants. The CAA has put the cut off as December 31,2014. The Congress lost its Muslim vote bank to the AIUDF. In public, the north east-based regional political parties expressed outrage. Even the AGP, the opportunistic ally of the BJP took a moral stand on it. The people across the north east were united in one voice against “all illegal immigrants.” The north east regional parties adopted resolutions against the CAB. They decided to take a principled stand against the bill. However, in parliament, the north east regional parties barring the SDF took a “practical step” by voting in favour of the bill.By voting for the CAB, perhaps the regional parties concluded, that all illegal immigrants are Muslims. Clearly, regional parties owe an explanation to their people as to what made them take a U-turn? Whether they were convinced the ILP will solve the issue of illegal immigrants? By voting for the CAB the regional parties exposed they were running with the hare and hunting with the hound. ILP has not checked illegal immigrants in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram. CAA will legalise the illegal in Assam and the other states are bound to suffer the consequences.
