Mr India of the decade

Perhaps the absence of a ‘strong leader’ evident during the two-term period of the UPA government under Dr. Manmohan Singh has driven the Indian voters to yearn for a leader who would not only be visible but audible and action-oriented. That’s when Narendra Modi was chosen by the BJP in place of L.K. Advani to fill that need. Modi rode on the strong anti-incumbency factor and the need for a change during 2014. Modi underlined his decisive leadership with “muscular nationalism.” Equally relevant was the “Hindutva” line appeal plus his slogan of “vikas politics.” He also has given a boost to “Aspirational India”, cutting across caste lines.Today the politics of casteism or minoritysm appears to have folded up against the tidal wave in favour of Modi. He won the challenge and was elected with a majority in 2014. During the first five years Modi was branded as pro-rich (suit book ke sarkar) but in the 2019 election, he offset it by talking at great length and through various media about his pro-poor background. Modi was not only seen as a muscular politician with dynamism but his quality of communications skills remains unparalleled. Modi also thrived on opposition leaders’ absence of unity, their politics of negativism and missing vision for the India of tomorrow. No wonder, Narendra Modi clicked in a big way despite his certain failures in generation of jobs, attending to the farmers’ plight and proper management of socio-economic and financial reforms. He achieved this mainly due to his personal appeal against the no-contest from the fragmented and disparate opposition parties. Modi was handed a virtual cake walk due to the ignorance of Rahul Gandhi’s Congress and other tall stalwarts of opposition. The opposition could only dream of taking on Modi but were disunited in projecting even a single leader to take him on. The negatives that the opposition projected about Modi only made him more determined to succeed and he did just that, single handed, campaigning without any let up through the length and breadth of the country. Equally noteworthy was BJP Chief Amit Shah’s aggressive campaigning in non-BJP States. Shah defies the very notion of the chief of a big national party because he works on the ground and not in air conditioned rooms. He meets booth level workers and then makes his plans. For the present, Modi is indeed the man for all seasons who will certainly make a huge difference to the country. He has the guts to stick to his decisions and this has earned him the admiration of even his harshest critics. Bills that his government passed during the first 100 days in office is unparalleled. The most noteworthy was abrogation of Article 370 which will change the dynamics of Kashmir politics and security situation. For Nagas, Modi did what no other prime minister did- gave the famous August 3, 2015 Framework Agreement over which the much desired Naga political solution would be based upon. This was proof of his dynamism and for which Nagas are indeed very grateful. Modi has proved he is a leader with a difference and it is now unchallenged and perhaps for a long time. It is hoped he would also act boldly in streamlining the systems and promote a healthy environment.
