Normal life was severely affected, as the 48-hour general strike called by Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) entered its second day Thursday.
No untoward incident was reported during the strike hours. Large number of strike supporters, particularly womenfolk came out on the streets in their respective localities and imposed the bandh.
Small market places in the outskirts of the city were also forced to close by womenfolk. Similar reports were reported from across the valley districts.
While enforcing the strike, the womenfolk shouted various slogans supporting the demand for removal of vice-chancellor of Manipur University Prof AP Pandey and also demanded befitting action against the police personnel for allegedly using excessive force against the student volunteers of DESAM.
During the early hour of the strike, there was a heated exchange of words between some street vendors and women vendors of Ema Keithel (Women market) after the former sold their wares on the street near the market complex.
Meanwhile, a group of women attempted to storm the fortified Imphal Raj Bhavan in the afternoon which was foiled by the police and paramilitary personnel.
Shops and markets across the city and its outskirts remained closed for the second consecutive day and commercial vehicles stayed off the road.
Cross border trade activities in Moreh, the border town of Manipur at Indo-Myanmar border was severely hit as residents enforced the bandh apart.
At dawn, before the conclusion of the general strike, womenfolk marched rallies with torches in their hands showing solidarity to the demand of MUSU.
