Naga girls to take part in Gothai Cup

The Nagaland U-15 girls football team under the banner ‘Sports Club Nagaland’ will take part at the international tournament ‘Gothai Cup’ from July 14 in Sweden. In this regard, a brief send off programme was held at IG Stadium, Kohima on Tuesday afternoon.

A total of 21 members including 14 budding footballers led by Imli Meren Jamir as the team captain, Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports, Er. Zale Neikha and two team coaches – FIFA Grade-A coach Sebastian Rasmussen and state coach Ruopfuo Meyase and other officials will be leaving on July 10 from Dimapur to Delhi for onward journey to Sweden.

It may be mentioned here that Gothai Cup is the world’s largest International Youth Football Tournament and it will be held from July 14 to 20 at Gothenburg, Sweden.

Besides taking part in the tournament, the Nagaland team will also be representing India in the parade of nations during the opening ceremony.

Speaking to media persons, Zale Neikha, advisor, Youth Resources and Sports said representing India in an international tournament is no less an achievement and also once in a lifetime opportunity.

The advisor hoped that Nagaland team will be able to compete professionally at the highest level with other teams and show the rest of the world their talent as a sportsperson and also the uniqueness of our Naga identity and culture during the opening ceremony.

He also expressed hope that participating at the Gothia Cup will motivate and inspire other budding sportspersons to excel and become professionals at the national and international level.

Mentioned be made that Department of Youth Resources and Sports has taken the initiative to send a team to the international tournament to help the players gain exposure and also as part of the year long centenary celebration of legendary Naga footballer Dr T Ao. 

The department in collaboration with Soccer Competition had been conducting football training session for four months at IG Stadium to compete at the international event.
