 The Department of Sericulture organised a ‘Naga Silk’ show 2018 on November 27 at Heritage, Kohima, under North Eastern Region Textile Promotion scheme, Ministry of Textiles, GoI.

The main purpose of organising the Naga Silk Show 2018 is to promote Naga silk for the upcoming young entrepreneurs and also to harness the economic boon.

Advisor, Horticulture, Mhathung Yanthan who was the guest speaker spoke on the origin and production of silk and stated that sericulture is an agro based commercial and also eco-friendly enterprise which can generate sufficient income and employment for the farmers.

He further highlighted that Muga, Eri, Mulberry and Tasar silks types are reared successfully in Nagaland because of the favourable climatic conditions and as per report, 16,500 numbers of framers are engaged in Sericulture, producing about 350 to 400 MT of cocoons. 

But he expressed that most of the raw materials are sold outside the state rather than processing ourselves in the state.

“Naga Silk show 2018” showcased collection of various  designers of Achine Dolie (Mekhela suit) traditional Penene; Designer Kenei Kolho showcased on Accessories; Day wear apparels collection by designer WecheteKhape; Sericulture Department showcased apparels produced titled ‘weaves of nature’.

Welcome address was delivered by Director of Sericulture, Imtisosang. Songs were presented by Virie, a renowned singer and Vipito V Swu, main vocalist of unplugged string. Other highlights of the programme included overview on the process of Silk production by the Department of Sericulture and display of various silk products manufactured in the state which are also available for sale at the stalls.

Earlier the event was hosted by Kohima College, assistant professor, Theyie Keditsu.
