Nagaland celebrated the 70th Republic Day with celebration programs organized in all districts and subdivisions. Turnout was reported to have been poor with various organizations calling for boycott of the celebrations as a sign of protest against the Citizenship Amendment Bill 2016. Following are reports from all over Nagaland. Except where otherwise mentioned, all the reports are from the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR).

Kiphire: Kiphire observed Republic day at Public ground Kiphire with a conspicuous absence in turnout as seats remained mostly empty. The ENSF, together with the NSF, had called a boycott of the Republic Day celebrations as a sign of protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016. Subsequently, the United Sangtam Students’ Union (USSC) had also appealed to citizens under its jurisdiction to refrain from participating in the celebrations.

The program was, however, conducted with minister of Higher & Technical Education, Temjen Imna Along as the chief guest.

The chief guest read out the Republic day speech and extended greetings on the occasion. Nine stalls were also set up by different departments and NGOs.

Mon: In Mon Headquarter, the 70th Republic day was celebrated at Local Ground with virtually no public participation. Apart from a few people and passersby along the road, only a handful of members of the public came to view the celebration.

The crowds that usually throng the ground during such events abstained due to the boycott called by the ENSF and KSU to express resentment against the CAB 2016. Special numbers, choreographed presentations and cultural dances which were supposed to be performed by students and members of the public had to be cancelled as the participants failed to turn up due to the boycott.
