Following National Green Tribunal (NGT) order to ban fire crackers across 23 states and UTs amidst the double whammy of the pollution crisis and the COVID pandemic, Nagaland too has decided to ban sale and use of firecrackers.

Official sources informed Nagaland Post that there was no question of allowing bursting of firecrackers this festive season in the State in the interest of public health and environment and against the backdrop of COVID-19 pandemic. The sources added that an order would be issued by the State government banning firecrackers shortly.

It may be mentioned that NGT had on November 2 issued notices to Union Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) and several State governments on prohibiting firecrackers from November 7 to 30 in the interest of public health and environment. The NGT on Wednesday expanded the scope of pleas filed before it seeking a ban on sale and use of crackers in the National Capital Region (NCR) by issuing notices to 18 States, including Nagaland.

A bench headed by NGT chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel noted that it had already issued notice to Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, even as the State governments of Odisha and Rajasthan have already issued a notification prohibiting sale and use of firecrackers.

The green panel sought responses from Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Chhattisgarh, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttarakhand and West Bengal.
