Nagaland U-14 team to take part in Subroto Cup

The U-14 boys of Greenwood Higher Secondary School, Dimapur will be representing the state at the diamond jubilee edition of Subroto Cup International Football Tournament.

The Greenwood School U-14 boys have won the Subroto Cup in 2008, 2012, and 2014 and was also the runners up in 2007. The team will kick start the campaign against Bangladesh at 8:30am on Wednesday morning.  

The Asia's largest youth football meet will see a record 112 teams, including 16 international teams vying for the coveted title for sub-junior boys (U-14) and junior (U-17) boys and girls categories. The tournament began on Tuesday at the Ambedkar Stadium, Delhi and will conclude on September 18th.

Nagaland team consists of 18 members with Mughato Aye as team coach, Akihito Zhimomi as team manager and assisted by two officials. 

Advisor for Youth Resources and Sports, Er. Zale Neikha paid a visit to the U-14 Nagaland boys in Delhi and interacted with the players. Neikha encouraged the players to give their best while exuding confidence in the ability of players and the team as a whole to win the cup. Citing the recent achievement of the SC Nagaland team that took part in international tournament, the advisor reminded the players that the state players have the potential to compete with any teams in the international arena.

Subroto Cup Football Tournament is one of the famous inter-school football tournaments in India, named after the Indian Air Force Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee.

The tournament is being organised by the Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society under the aegis of Air Force Sports Control Board and supported by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Ministry of Human Resource Development and the Sports Authority of India. 

The winner for sub-junior boys’ will receive a cash prize of Rs 3 lakhs while the winners of junior boys' and girls' categories will receive Rs 4 lakh each.
