Condemning the recent attack on women’s rights activist, Agnes Kharshiing and her aide on November 8 and the series of attacks and killings in Meghalaya, the North East Dialogue Forum (NEDF) has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to initiate actions and arrest the perpetrators.

The forum in an appeal letter by its convenor, U. Nobokishore to the Prime Minister said Agnes and her aide Amita Sangma were brutally attacked by truck drivers of illegal coal carriers on November 8 “for tracking the route of illegal coal filled trucks and taking photograph” at Tuber Sehshrieh area, East Jaintia Hills, district Meghalaya.

In March 2018, Poipynhum Majaw was murdered for his continuous engagement with RTI work in the same district, however, till date, justice has not been delivered to his family members, it stated.

Citing another incident, on April 17, 2018, where the house of an editor of Shillong Times, Patricia Mukhim was attacked with bomb, the forum pointed out that till now, not a single person involved in the attacked had been arrested.

Apart from the above mentioned incidents, the forum claimed that one person was attacked and two others were killed recently in the state. NEDF further claimed that all these crimes were well organized and executed with proper planning.

In this regard, NEDF has urged the prime minister to urgently intervene into the matter and arrest the perpetrators involved in all the aforementioned crimes at the earliest.
