Night curfew extended in East Khasi Hills

Night curfew has been extended in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district with immediate effect for the next eight days starting from Monday, an official said on Sunday.  
Deputy Commissioner for East Khasi Hills district, Matsiewdor War Nongbri said the night curfew was extended from May 11 to May 16 from 7 p.m to  9 a.m the next day daily in view of the prevailing situation concerning COVID-19. 
In her order, Nongbri prohibited inter-district and inter-state movement besides operation of major markets and shopping complexes in all commercial locations. 
“Operations of all cinema halls, shopping malls, gymnasium, sports complexes, swimming pools, entertainment parks, theatres, bars and auditorium, assembly halls and recreational places are also prohibited,” she said. 
Nongbri said hotel and hospitality services other than those used as quarantine facilities and housing stranded persons and tourists are allowed to operate. 
However, private and commercial establishments shall open in Shillong urban agglomeration for five days from May 12 to May 16 from 9 a.m to 4 p.m each day.  
“The curfew was put in place as preventive measures and awareness, to indentify and to take more stringent steps to ensure social distancing so the pandemic of COVID-19 is contained, reduced and eliminate in the district, by way of ensuring observance of strict protocols of the advisories issued by the State health department,” she said. 
Meghalaya has two active COVID-19 cases with both patients from East Khasi Hills district. Ten others have recovered and the first patient died on April 15 - two days after he tested positive for COVID-19.
