NLA session on Jan 17 to ratify 126th amendment bill

In supersession of the earlier notification, NLA secretary, Dr. P.J. Antony has informed that the Nagaland Governor R.N. Ravi has summoned the fifth session of the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly to meet at 9.30 a.m. on January 17, 2020 in the Assembly Hall, Kohima.

According to sources, the Assembly session has been summoned to ratify the Constitution (126th Amendment) Bill passed by the Parliament in December 2019. After a resolution is passed to ratify the Bill, the house will be adjourned and resume business on February 7 as notified earlier by NLA.

The Bill seeks to extend the reservation for SCs and STs by another 10 years till January 25, 2030.

The Bill amends provisions related to reservation of seats for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs).The Constitution provides for reservation of seats for SCs and STs and representation of the Anglo-Indian community by nomination, in Lok Sabha and Legislative Assemblies of states.

This has been provided for a period of 70 years since the enactment of the Constitution and will expire on January 25, 2020.
