North East Dr. T Ao Trophy to kick start today

North East Dr. T Ao Trophy will kick start on Monday at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima. The inaugural programme will be graced by the Governor of Nagaland, R.N. Ravi and welcome address will be delivered by Er. Zale Neikha, advisor, Department of Youth Resources and Sports.

The organising committee informed that bus services will be provided from High School to the venue and while the entry is free.  Nagaland are clubbed with Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Tripura in Group A while Sikkim, Assam, Mizoram and Meghalaya are in Group-B. Host team Nagaland will play the first match against Arunachal Pradesh while Manipur will take on Tripura on Monday. The top two teams from each Group will then qualify for the semi-final round. 

Each team will play a total of three matches in the league round. The final will be played on January 28. Zale Neikha, advisor for Youth Resources and Sports said that northeast region is a hub of talented sportspersons. In recent times, the region has been able to produce many excellent sportspersons in varied disciplines. 

“Today, North-east has the potential of becoming a hotspot for young budding sportspersons to excel and become professionals” said the advisor.

While welcoming all the teams, he asked all the players to play in the true spirit of the game, showcasing their talents to the best of their ability. He also expressed hope that the beautiful game of football will be a platform for spreading message of love and peace among the region.  The advisor also appealed all to make time from their busy schedules and witness the grand sporting event at IG Stadium.

Nagaland team manager Colo Mero said expressed his satisfaction over the preparation for the North East Dr T Ao Trophy by the state government. 

The facilities, hospitality and organisers are all quite professional. If football fraternity is given support and attention consistently by the state government, Nagaland football will get very far within no time, he asserted. 

He also suggested that Nagaland football need to start from basics. The support and contributions of players, coaches, referees, associations, the government and fans in their respective ways are all equally important for professional football to develop in Nagaland. “Let us give our best and make Nagaland a football state,” said the manager.
