IMPHAL, Nov 24: Upcoming general election to Manipur Assembly will be a boon for the party, said National People’s Party (NPP) national president and Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma, in an address during a party function in Imphal on Wednesday

He was optimistic of his party emerging as a single largest party in the Manipur legislative Assembly after the 2022 general elections.

“Our party is getting popular among the people of the state. I am sure we will be the single largest party in the Assembly after the election,” Sangma, who was on a three-day visit in the state, said on Wednesday.

He was speaking to party workers at a function held in Imphal West district, felicitating aspiring candidates of the upcoming elections in the state who formally joined the party. On the occasion held at the residence of a party intending candidate at Patsoi in Imphal West, four aspiring candidates seeking NPP’s ticket were felicitated.

He told the party leaders to work at their best level and not to miss the opportunity while asserting that more intending candidates were approaching the party as their choice.

The national president announced that the party will finalize names of the candidates to be fielded as party nominees in the upcoming polls within a couple of days.

“The Central office (of NPP) will be finalizing and notifying an election committee in the next couple of days. The committee will handle the task of selecting candidates,” he said.

The committee was necessitated as it would not be a light task for the party to decide to whom party’s ticket would be offered as a number of aspiring candidates sought party tickets, he said.

“Now it has become a difficult task for the party leadership to decide to whom the party ticket will be offered,” he claimed.

The NPP leader hinted at the party offering its tickets to the candidate of choice of party workers and supporters of each constituency.

Asserting that the popularity of the party was increasing in the state with the approaching of the elections, he credited the party’s state unit leaders and workers for the same and urged them to leave no stone unturned to take the opportunity.

The national president also announced  a mega congregation of youth of the northeast in Imphal on December 10.

“I will be participating personally in a youth conference of the party in Imphal on December 10,” he said.

The conference will also be participated by leaders of the party from other northeast states. It will discuss the problems confronting the youths of the region in general and Manipur in particular, he added.

Manipur deputy chief minister Y Joykumar who is also the national vice-president of NPP, NPP state unit president N Kayisii, working president and MLA L Jayentakumar, NPP national general secretary Thomas Sangma were among others who attended the function.
