NSCN (I-M) says it does not extort, only levies tax

NSCN (I-M) through its MIP Saturday reiterated that it “did not and does not commit extortion at any point of time but levies legitimate taxes from the people.”

NSCN (I-M) further asserted that  the “inherent right of any sovereign people and nation to collect taxes from the people and commercial establishments” which was a universal practice. NSCN (I-M) also said taxes have been the sources of sustenance that has brought the Naga political movement thus far.

However, it said that the “madness” of ‘extortions’ that were being carried out by “some groups in the guise of freedom fighters” has complicated the situation as seen today.

NSCN (I-M) maintained that it is a “recognized and legitimate national organization of the Naga people and not a gang” since no gang has found its place as member in the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organization (UNPO)- parallel organization to the United Nations (UN)- to which it was a bona fide member.
