NSLSA compensates victims under NVCS 2012

Justice L.S. Jamir, Judge Gauhati High Court and executive chairman Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) handed over compensatory awards amounting to Rs. 33,65,000 to 22 recipients under the Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme (NVCS), 2012 at the conference hall of Gauhati High, Kohima Bench on August 10.

A press release from NSLSA public relation assistant, Kohima, stated that the compensation was awarded to the family member and care takers of three victims, while the amount for 19 other victims will be handed over by the respective DLSAs to the family members and care takers of the victims.

Delivering a short speech, Neiteo Koza, project coordinator NSLSA, reported that the government of Nagaland had sanctioned Rs. 33,65,000 as compensation under the Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012 to 22 rightful beneficiaries. 

She said that seven applicants were recommended by Dimapur District Legal Services Authority, two by Kohima District Legal Services Authority, two by Mon District Legal Services Authority, three by Tuensang District Legal Services Authority, two by Phek District Legal Services Authority, two by Mokokchung District Legal Services Authority, one by Wokha District Legal Services Authority, one by Kiphire District Legal Services Authority, one by Zunheboto District Legal Services Authority and one by Nagaland State Legal Services Authority. 

Neiteo Koza appealed to the state government to earmark and maintain a separate budget as per the Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012 so that if any recommendation is made by the legal services authority, the victims can be given interim relief to meet their needs such as medical care, counseling, and other necessities required for rehabilitation. 

Neiteo Koza further stated that a new scheme for women has been introduced by the NALSAs compensation scheme for women victims/survivors of sexual assault or other crimes, 2018. According to her, the Supreme Court directed all the state governments and union territories to implement it from May 2018.

Mezivolu T Therieh, member secretary NSLSA thanked the government (for the timely release of the compensation), the judges presiding over the cases, public prosecutors and the investigation agencies.

Registrar and deputy registrar of the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench members of CHILDLINE, Kohima Orphanage and Destitute Home, public prosecutor Kohima, panel lawyers of NSLSA and Kohima DLSA were present at the program.
