Nagaland Timber Traders’ Union (NTTU) expressed concern over alleged “excessive” taxation imposed on timber-laden trucks at Pfutsero, Peducha and Chümoukedima check gates by Forest department. Briefing media persons in Dimapur on Friday, NTTU officials said that forest department charges Rs.3000 each at Pfutsero and Peducha check gates and Rs.5000 at Chümoukedima check gate without providing money receipts.
From January 15, 2017 to July 9, 2018, a total of 1116 timber laden trucks were allowed to pass without transit permit, alleged NTTU officials. The union also wondered if the money collected at the gates were going to state government revenue or into the pockets of officials manning the check gates. They said that as per Naga tradition and under Art. 371 (A), ownership of the land and resources belong to the people. Accordingly, no State government agency has the right to impose tax on timber grown in one’s own forest, NTTU  added.
