Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) and Kohima Law College (KLC) launched two-week celebration of “world consumer rights day” under 2021 theme, “tackling plastic pollution” on March 2 at the College premises. The event is observed globally on March 15.

In a press release, press & media cell, NVCO stated that during the launching programme, NVCO and final year students of the college conducted a session on how to raise awareness on reducing plastic pollution and engage citizens/consumers to adopt and promote more sustainable practices.

Presenting a talk on the theme, NVCO president Kezhokhoto Savi said that although plastic was useful, the consumption and production of plastics, especially single-use plastic had become unsustainable which was impacting the ecosystems and causing negative consequences to the environment as well as human health.

He said that tackling plastic pollution was a global challenge which required coordinated and international solutions. However, citizens of the state could play a critical role by promoting sustainable consumption and production of plastics.

Savi encouraged consumers to be concerned about plastic pollution and switch to reusable bags while shopping, using refillable drinking bottles, etc.

“Systematic market place change is required at all levels from governments, business and standard setters to make tackling plastic pollution and sustainable consumption the easy choice for consumers”, Savi stated.

It may be noted that the team would be creating awareness on different levels covering topics such as consumer rights, environment protection, human rights, state consumer helpline with toll free 1800-345-3701, tackling plastic pollution, etc by following government SOPs. The team would give first priority to churches especially youth departments.
