Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) observed the “World Food Safety Day” in Kohima on June 7, to create awareness upon the citizens following the United Nations direction to promote global food safety awareness.

A press release from NVCO press and media cell stated that, president of Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation advocate Kezhokhoto Savi spoke on the occasion and assured that Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation would continue to conduct awareness campaign on food safety as it had been doing for the last several years.

He added that government of Nagaland had implemented the Food Safety & Standard Act 2006 and as per the Act, food safety refers to the condition and practices that preserve the quality of food to prevent contamination of food borne illness.

Savi also added that under Consumer Protection Act 1986, the consumers have the right to safety and are protected against marketing of goods and services which are hazardous to life.

Pointing out that Nagaland state has the level-2 laboratory, the first in the entire North East and fully funded by the Food Safety and Standard Authority of India (FSSAI) at state public health laboratory in Kohima, Savi suggested the food business operators (FBOs) to have their products/food item/sample tested in the laboratory at Para-medical, Kohima, before they sell out to the consumers.
