On homosexuality and the church in Nagaland

I’ve come across a couple of releases in the local dailies wherein church associations have come out against the recent Supreme Court ruling with regard to Article 377. I’d like to state that homosexuality is not a choice. It is the result of a combination of various factors: hormonal, genetic and environmental. It’s not like homosexuals decide to be homosexual all of a sudden. They can’t do anything about it. And as such, we must make sure that we treat them equally with the same amount of respect as we would treat a straight/heterosexual person. They are human beings after all. Ostracization will never solve the problem. What we as Christians need to understand and do is to show them love and care, that we are all the same. Many treatments have been tried to ‘cure’ people of homosexuality. Electric treatment/therapy is one classic example, especially in the USA. Did it ever work out ? No. The bottom line is that humanity should be above everything. I am of the opinion that the Church should concentrate more on issues like illegal taxation/extortion and underdevelopment. Listen to the helpless cries of the masses. As I write this, I am pretty sure many a Naga share my opinion. We have much more urgent matters to take care of where the church can play a significant role in leading the people. While we’re at it, is the Church also ready to have a public discourse on the failure of liquor prohibition in this failed state? We need to identify our priorities as a society that seeks to progress forward.

When the guiding light fades out, darkness descends.
