One held with contraband drugs worth Rs 8.5 crore in Moreh

 An alleged drug peddler was arrested with contraband drugs estimated Rs 8.5 crore in the international market in Manipur’s border town Moreh on Tuesday.

The seized drugs were 2.356 kg of brown sugar, 244 gram of heroin, and 342 packets of WY tablet, each packet containing 200 tablets. The alleged drug peddler was identified as Jilkhongam @ Tarmon Lhungdim (44) son of Sokhothang Lhungdim of Jangoubung village, currently staying at Moreh ward number 2.  

Indian currency notes amounting to Rs 23.42 lakh and Burmese kyat amounting to 1.80 lakh was seized during the raid conducted at the current residence of the alleged drug peddler around 7.30 am, a police source said.

The source said that a combined team of state police at the border town and troops of 43rd battalion Assam Rifles conducted the raid based on input.

Police and security forces, particularly Assam Rifles in the border town have been conducting relentless crackdown on contraband drugs the last few days based on input of high profile drug peddlers operating in the town bordering Myanmar.

The police and Assam Rifles have been have been sanitizing the area and after a thorough search of the house,  illegal drugs were found concealed at multiple locations.

The recovery on Tuesday was days after the one of the biggest recoveries of contraband drugs so far this year on February 19 in which Assam Rifles seized a huge quantity of WY (World is Yours) tablets worth approximately Rs 14.58 crore while checking a vehicle originating from the border town.

The police source estimated that in the operations conducted to crack down on drug peddlers, the police and security forces along with other concerned agencies have so far seized brown sugar, heroin and WY tablets  worth over Rs 50 crore from the current year till date.
