In what seems like a gloomy Sunday for Prime Minister Modi, West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee, SP chief Akhilesh and Sam Pitroda among others took to twitter to slam Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his comments on former PM Rajiv Gandhi.

At a rally in Uttar Pradesh Saturday, Modi targeted the former prime minister in a tirade against his son Congress chief Rahul Gandhi over his allegations around the Rafale fighter jet deal. “Your father was termed Mr Clean by his courtiers, but his life ended as bhrashtachari no 1,” Modi said referring to Bofors scandal.

Mamata, who has been campaigning extensively, apologised for the delay in responding to “the audacity of such a statement”.

“Sorry for my delayed response on this. I was campaigning. The comments made by ‘Expiry PM’ ModiJi against fmr PM Rajiv Gandhiji are very unfortunate. RajivJi dedicated himself & laid down his life for the motherland. I condemn the language used & the audacity of such a statement,” she said.

SP chief Akhilesh Yadav also hit out at Modi saying, “Election or not, this is basic humanity” to respect the martyred”. The former UP CM added, “The statement by PM indicates levels to which people can stoop for the sake of clinging to power”.

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti also slammed Modi. She said “Rajiv Gandhi lost his life serving our country. He was a true patriot who certainly doesn’t need a certificate from those who lynch in the name of religion”.

Gandhis react: Congress president Rahul Gandhi and general secretary Priyanka Gandhi on Sunday criticized Modi for alleging that their father, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was corrupt. Priyanka said the remark reflected Modi’s uncontrolled madness. “The Prime Minister, who asks for votes in the name of martyrs, yesterday, in his uncontrolled madness, insulted a virtuous man and his martyrdom,” she said in a tweet. “The people of Amethi, for whom Rajiv Gandhi gave up his life, will give him a befitting reply. Yes, Modi ji, this country does not forgive deceitful people.”

Congress President Rahul Gandhi said Modi’s “karma awaits” him. “Modiji, The battle is over. Your Karma awaits you,” Rahul said in a tweet. “Projecting your inner beliefs about yourself onto my father won’t protect you. All my love and a huge hug, Rahul.”

Meanwhile, Congress moved the Election Commission over Modi’s remark.

BJP backs Modi: Union Minister Prakash Javadekar defended Modi on Sunday calling the Congress party ‘dynasts’. “Yesterday, the prime minister told the truth about Gandhi family, especially about Rajiv Gandhi...” Javadekar said.
