An orientation programme to new guidelines of the Maternal Death Review (MDR) was held at Dimapur CMO’s office chambers on April 8.

A press release from DPO, RCH-UIP, Dimapur, media cell, stated that Dr. Rebecca Y. Sema, was the resource person for the programme, who reoriented the members to the subject of maternal death and various common causes leading to maternal death in India.
She also stated that besides medical causes, there are others contributing factors that lead to maternal death such as low socio-economic status, illiteracy, lack of transportation, early marriage, etc.
Dr. Rebecca stated that the  Maternal Death Review was initiated in 2010 under National Health Mission, and to provide it with a proper response mechanism, it has been moved to the Maternal Death Surveillance and Response (MDSR).
Dr. Rebecca stated that with proper reporting and analysis of any maternal death, suggested corrective measures can be implemented to improve service delivery and preparedness of patients to avoid preventable maternal deaths.
A single maternal death can throw light into various issues at the community level, during referral, facility level, district and state level and also provide an opportunity to fix such issues, she stated.
The orientation programme was attended by members of the Maternal Death Review Committees.
