Phesa World Cup underway

The 7th edition of Phesa World Cup got underway at St. Paul School Stadium, Phesama with Vekhosa Chakhesang, Senior Superintendent of Police, Kohima as the special guest. The event is being organised under the theme ‘Connecting Phesama’ on Tuesday.

Speaking at the inaugural function, Vekhosa lauded the village for organizing the event and urged the organisers to incorporate the good and ethical ideas of the World Cup. While reminding that “our forefathers had high regard for sports and recreation,” he urged the player to inhabit the same spirit of the forefathers. 

Delivering the keynote address, convenor of organizing committee, Vizokho Zashumo expounded Phesama as a village that loves sports. The theme, ‘Connecting Phesama,’ is envisioned to enhance unity among the villagers, bind and bring together people of the village and the nearby villages and region, he added. 

The 7th edition of the Phesa World Cup is featuring six strong favourite countries - Brazil, Japan, Spain, England, Argentina and loyal fans of Italy. Grouped in two, Japan, Brazil and Argentina are in slot one while Spain, Italy England in the other slot. 

Japan and Argentina in group A have advanced to semi-finals with three and six points each. From group B, Spain has also qualified for the semi-finals with six points.  Other than the champions trophy, individual trophies include the Golden Boot, Golden Ball, Golden Glove and the Young Player award will also be given. 

Meanwhile, the organizers has thanked special guest Vekhosa Chakhesang and his wife, VZ Angami, Commandant, 5th IR Bn, Zhadima and his wife and invitees of Southern Angami Sports Association(SASA), Angami Students Union (ASU), Kimiphiiphe Youth Organization, Medo Yhokha, PRO to Speaker, St Paul School, Phesama and Ketoupuzo Lhoushe, Beizo M Kuotsii and Metekhreito Mejura.
