Promotional angling competition held at Wokha

The first promotional local angling competition was held on July 21 at Tsumang Lake, Wokha. The event was graced by Deputy Commissioner, Wokha Dr.Manazir Jeelani Samoon, IAS as the special guest. The competition was organised District Angler’s Wokha Nagaland (DAWN) in collaboration with Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources.
Johny Ezung emerged as the winner of the competition and was awarded a cash prize of Rs.20,000. Rensathung Kikon and M.Yilobemo bagged the second and third place and were awarded Rs.15,000 and 10,000 respectively. More than 30 prizes were given in different category to the anglers. 69-year-old Ekyimo Erui, the oldest angler, was also awarded with cash prize and certificate, while the luckiest angler was bagged by Simon Kikon.
Speaking at the prize distribution ceremony, Deputy Commissioner, Wokha said, the competition organized by the angler’s association was not just for recreation but for a cause. He said that initiatives like these will go a long way in helping conservation and creating awareness among the common masses about conservation of fishes. When it comes to saving endangered species of fish, it is the responsibility of every concerned individual to work together, he added. The DC also urged the gathering and participants to discourage the use of dynamites, chemicals and electronic equipments to catch fish as it leads to depletion of fishes. The prize distribution ceremony was chaired by event organizing secretary Khyolamo, while the welcome address was delivered by DAWN president, K.N.Mhonthung Lotha.
