A proposal for upgrading Mangkolemba sub-division to full-fledged district has been sent to Home commissioner by commissioner Nagaland on November 5.

Speaking to Nagaland Post, commissioner Nagaland Rovilatuo Mor confirmed that the proposal for upgrading Mangkolemba sub-division to a full-fledged district was received from public of the area, which was forwarded by Mokokchung deputy commissioner (DC). He said the proposal had been further forwarded to the Home commissioner to take further course of action.

Mor said the public of Mangkolemba demanded the upgrade on the basis of the area’s geographical exclusiveness and shared border with Assam, so that the area is protected from border problems. He added that the public also demanded that the administration be equipped with more authority at the district level.

He explained that their concern was regarding the hierarchy in functioning/administration of a sub-division and a district.

Pointing out that there were other proposals too for upgrading sub-divisions to districts like Tseminyu, Tobu and Aboi, he assured that the State government would examine which sub-division deserved upgrade.

State chief secretary Sentiyanger Imchen said that upgrading Mangkolemba sub-division to a full-fledged district was just a proposal, adding that it would have to be examined.

Meanwhile, sources from Mangkolemba Town Council told this correspondent that a cabinet memo was awaited on the proposal for upgrading Mangkolemba sub-division to a full-fledged district.
