After Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North-Eastern Region (DoNER), Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that the Greenfield airport at Ciethu in Kohima proposed by the government of Nagaland was financially unviable, the Ministry of civil aviation is scheduled to hold a meeting in Delhi Tuesday.

Highly placed sources informed Nagaland Post that after the first proposal was turned down, another Detailed Project Report (DPR) amounting to over Rs. 2000 crore was prepared. It was also disclosed that the ministry of civil aviation has directed the state government to appoint a consultant to prepare a fresh DPR.

Accordingly, sources transport department had prepared a final draft for the bidding but it was yet to be submitted to the state government for approval. Once approved, the official said, it may not take long to invite open tender for consultancy.

It may be mentioned that the DoNER minister on July 25, gave a written reply in Rajya Sabha that the feasibility study for Ciethu was conducted by the multi-disciplinary team comprising officials from Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and AAI in August, 2018.

The MoS DoNER had said that though the project was technically feasible yet the financial implication of site development was exorbitant, thus making the project financially unviable.

Greenfield airport at Ciethu in Kohima was proposed in 2003 and has been running into numerous hiccups. The project remains in limbo even after feasibility surveys and studies by various Central government agencies and preparation of DPR.
