Protest against eviction drive at Lankaijan reserved forest in KA

Eviction drive in Langkaijan area of Karbi Anglong in the inter-district border of Karbi Anglong and Hojai  had to be suspended following stiff resistance and protest on Friday which resulted in resorting to baton-charge.

According to magistrate on duty, Norsing Bey, police resorted to baton charge to tackle the situation. Security forces later recovered large quantity of sharp weapons from the site.

Earlier, despite protest approximately 10 illegal constructions were dismantled. The eviction drive was carried out by officials and staff of Land Revenue department, forest department of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council assisted by police, para military and executive magistrate. It may be noted that the reserved forest land is located within general area of Lankai Jan around 30 kilometers from Diphu HQs and administrated by Phuloni revenue circle.

The whole government land has been allegedly occupied by doubtful Bangladeshi nationals who are utilizing the occupied land for agricultural purpose. Karbi Anglong’s additional deputy commissioner Norsing Bey and magistrates Karpun Patir, Kilunteule Zeme and Mukur Borah; superintendent of police (SP) Gaurav Upadhyay; additional SP (Headquarter) Indranil Baruah and KAAC deputy secretary in charge of land revenue Michael Timung and secretary Tensing Rongpi led the eviction team.
