rape and murder suspect of teenage girl held in Manipur

Manipur police have arrested the main suspect in the rape and murder of a 19-year-old girl that triggered widespread protest in Thoubal district. The dead body of Khullakpam Washima (19) daughter of Janamuddin (44) of Yairipok Tulihal Mayai Leikai of Thoubal district was recovered from a roadside canal near Irong Chesaba under Mayang Imphal police station of Imphal West district on Tuesday morning.
The victim’s body, with both hands and feet tied, was found floating in the canal when it was recovered by the police. The victim was a student of Maharaja Bodhachandra College, Imphal who stayed with one of her aunties at Mayang Imphal and was missing when her aunty checked to her room in the morning. Residents of Yairipok in Thoubal district where the victim girl hailed from have been protesting against the murder of the teenage girl. Even as relatives of the deceased girl pointed figure to her lover behind the murder, police have been on the search for the suspect who was not at home from the day the dead body of the girl was recovered.
In connection to the rape, a 32-year-old youth identified as Md Sahid of Changamdabi village was arrested by a team of Thoubal district police yesterday along with a car allegedly used by the suspect while committing the crime.
He was produced before a Imphal West duty magistrate on Wednesday night who remanded him to the police custody for eight days.
