A special judge here convicted a person for raping of 12-year-old girl in 2015 and sentenced him to 16 years of imprisonment.

The accused, identified as 53-year-old (during the time of arrest) Khwushopra, was awarded concurrent sentences of 10 years under Section 376 IPC and 14 years imprisonment under Section 6 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO). He was also awarded a two-year jail term for criminal intimidation under 506 IPC.

Special public prosecutor Kathu Rengma informed media persons about this at his office chamber here on Thursday afternoon.

As per the sequence of events, a complaint was registered by the victim’s mother in June 2016, following which investigation officer UBSI Levinuo Nyuwei submitted a charge sheet and the trial began. Rengma said 10 witnesses were examined by the court. Special judge Kesheli Chishi pronounced the verdict on August 16.

Meanwhile, according to a delayed report, principal and district session judge Y Maongkaba Imchen sentenced two persons – Kruse Lcho (35) of Khonoma village and Vilalhoulie Rupreo (31) of Nchama Village – to rigorous imprisonment for being involved in the brutal murder of Tepumecie (Meciebo) Lcho on March 29, 2015.

Rengma said, as per a complaint lodged by Merima Village Council, a case was registered and investigation officer UBSI Lichanthung Lotha investigated the case and submitted the charge-sheet.

Accordingly the trial began and the judgement was given in February this year.

Rengma said initially four persons were accused and one person was caught with country-made pistol in his possession. However, he was found not involved in the crime and he was absolved.

The third accused was convicted for two years and eight months imprisonment under IPC 302.

On the other, it has been learnt that accused Zasituo Tsükrü held for the August 2 rape of a mother in Kohima was granted interim bail on health ground.
