The launching program for ‘Rashtriya Poshan Maah’ & Launching of Brand Ambassador, was held at the Conference Hall of Ura Hotel, Kohima on September 8.

A report by DIPR stated that speaking on the occasion, secretary, Social Welfare, Sarah R. Ritse said that professor Alongla P. Aier was selected as the brand ambassador for ‘Rashtriya Poshan Maah’ after much thought and deliberation which was approved with the consent of all the allied departments. Ritse described Alongla as a woman of faith, reputation, a role model to many and a woman who had done much for the nutrition and health of women and children.

Prof. Alongla P. Aier, when launching the program, said that in India, although there was an economic growth of nearly 10% annually, the rate of under nutrition remained very high. 48% children under the age of five are stunted due to chronic under nutrition which is largely due to the chronic undernourishment of Indian women, she stated. Professor Aier further went on to add that 36% of Indian women were chronically undernourished and were affected negatively more than men due to specific nutrition needs of women during adolescence, pregnancy and lactation. These under nourished children were likely to suffer from infections leading to -- early deaths, not being able to perform well in schools and as adults they are less productive. Women, she said, are at greater risk of pregnancy complications and death which hinders India’s socio-economic development and potential, especially in the fight to reduce poverty.

Considering the scenario, Prof. Aier said Poshan Abhyaan, the PM’s overreaching Scheme for hostlitic nourishment, under Ministry of Women & Child Development, government of India, was most needed and a welcome intervention to face the challenge of under nutrition. The goals of Poshan Abhyaan is to achieve improvement in nutritional status of children, adolescent girls, pregnant women and lactating mothers in the next three years. She said that Poshan Abhyaan is aimed at reaching every household with the message of nutrition, creating platforms, campaigns and common messages.

Professor Aier also launched the Rashtriya Poshan Abhiyaan campaign theme song arranged and composed by Bangshing Konyak of EaStory Project.

Joint Secretary, Youth Resources & Sports, Lima who also spoke on the occasion said that the Department of Youth Resources and Sports will also be initiating a rally ‘Yuva Shakti Rally’ on the September 15 to spread the Rashtriya Poshan Maah message.

The program was chaired by additional director & state nodal officer Poshan Abhiyaan department of Social Welfare, Tulula Pongen and vote of thanks was proposed by CDPO, master trainer Poshan Abhiyaan, Soren Kikon.
