Commemorating 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, governor RN Ravi launched Jal Shakti Campus and Jal Shakti Gram & Swachh Campus at Kohima College here Wednesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Ravi said cleanliness was next to godliness for Mahatma Gandhi, and this was the first step towards spiritual growth.

He maintained that Mahatma Gandhi National Council of Rural Education’s (MGNCRE) practical document was practical in keeping the campus clean and in conserving water.

He said it was part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development strategy when he launched the clean India movement because, when the country was clean, only then it would develop and grow.

He also mentioned that it was an initiative for social justice because absence of cleanliness was the reason for several diseases, adding poor people were the worst victims as they were made to spend their hard-earned wages on basic needs.

On water conservation, Ravi said UN aimed at ensuring availability of water and its sustainable management and sanitation for all by 2030. However, he remarked “in our own country and across the world, unscientific water management is creating havoc“.

He said conservation of water was a long-term strategy to meet water challenges, and urged educational institutions to help transforming not only their campuses but also focus on saving and creating a right environment.

He pointed that Gandhiji portrayed his inimitable preference towards resolving conflicts by substituting evil with love and advocated to carry forward the practice of non-violence.

Kohima College assistant professor Dr Eunice Alinger presented a life sketch of Mahatma Gandhi “father of the nation” while MGNCRE State programme coordinator Nutsulu Rhakho presented a report on Jal Shakti Campus and Jal Shakti Gram & Swachh Campus. Additional director and head of department Dr Apeni Lotha gave vote of thanks.
