Regional SARAS Fair commences

Ten-day regional sale of articles of Rural Artisans Society (SARAS) Fair, 2019, commenced on November 13, here at Dimapur Club, Midland, Dimapur, with deputy commissioner, Dimapur, Anoop Khinchi, as special guest, organised by Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM), department of RD. 

Addressing the gathering, the newly elected DC in brief, stressed on the importance of skill developmental programmes amongst the self help groups (SHGs) and urged them to carry our activities and training so as to improve the quality of the products. 

Further, he also encouraged the SHGs to focus on organic products and not to use non organic products. 

He also lauded the SHGs for carrying out tremendous jobs. 

Delivering the key note address, additional secretary and mission director, NSRLM, Athel O Lotha, stated that SARAS was a landmark initiative of the ministry of rural development, GOI, which started during 1999-2000, for promoting rural products and building capabilities of the rural artisans and entrepreneurs under Swarnjayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) scheme. 

Further, she stated that over 38 stalls were set up, with nearly 1200 rural SHG craftswomen from 38 blocks, showcasing curated collection of handlooms, handicrafts, jewellery, home décor artwork, furniture, handmade items of daily use, etc. 

She mentioned that SARAS fair has been playing key role in enhancement of marketing of rural products and traditional handicrafts, with various markets, improving livelihood opportunities or rural SHG’s. 

She ended her speech by stating that NSRLA was all about promoting local, by going local. 

Earlier, the programme was chaired by additional mission director, NSRLM, Kevipodi Sophie and invocation pronounced by Pastor, LBCD, Yanbemo Lotha.  A folk song was also presented by VLO Seithekima Base Village and vote of thanks delivered by COO, NSRLM, Menuoneituo Chadi.
