RS member raises food adulteration issue in Parl

Nagaland’s lone Rajya Sabha member, KG Kenye on Thursday raised the issue of adulteration and mixing of highly toxic and carcinogenic chemicals in food and essential commodities like formalin in fish, calcium carbide in fruits for early ripening and other harmful chemicals in essential commodities that had adversely affected health of lakhs of people in the State and the entire Northeast.

This, according to him, was the probable cause for the high incidences of cancer in the region, including Nagaland.

Speaking at the Upper House, the Rajya Sabha MP suspected a larger conspiracy behind all this and urged the Government of India to immediately investigate the matter through Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as Nagaland government alone could not tackle the syndicate that spanned across the country and had assumed an inter-State dimension.

Kenye stressed engagement of CBI to arrest the culprits behind this “sinister” design.

As Nagaland and the entire North-eastern region was located strategically with international borders, the MP feared that there could be a larger conspiracy to cut-off trade with the country’s mainland by monopolising and controlling the economy of the entire region through import of goods from the neighbouring countries.

This was stated in a press release issued by Kenye’s PRO Kuvera Nakro.
