The manager of a branch of the State Bank of India (SBI), who apparently dodged being medically screened at the Byrnihat check-point during his entry to Meghalaya, has subsequently tested positive for COVID-19.

The latest COVID-19 positive patient is the branch manager of the SBI at Khliehriat, the district headquarters of East Jaintia Hills. He tested positive on Tuesday and had violated the travelling protocol.

The senior bank official is the 52nd COVID-19 positive patient to have been registered in Meghalaya. Health and Family Welfare Minister, Alexander Laloo Hek said that the bank officer was transferred from Assam to Khliehriat in the East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.

Director Health Services (MI), Dr Aman War said that it was the Dorbar Shnong (local administrative body) at Khliehriat that informed the office of the DC of East Jaiñtia Hills district about the arrival of the branch manager.

“Later the branch manager was sent for mandatory quarantine and samples were collected for test,” Dr War said.

The branch manager, while passing through the check point at Byrnihat, had shown his identity card and was apparently allowed passage by those manning the check point there thinking he would stop in Shillong and get himself tested at Shillong Civil Hospital.

“He, however, proceeded straight to Khliehriat without stopping in Shillong for test,” Dr War said, adding that the SBI branch manager had violated the protocol and an FIR would be filed.

Health and Family Welfare Minister also said that action would be taken as an FIR would be filed against the branch manager for violating the protocol.
