SC to hear pleas against CAA on December 18

The Supreme Court on Monday agreed to hear on December 18 a batch of petitions challenging the constitutional validity of the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019.

Senior advocates and Congress leaders Abhishek Manu Singhvi and Kapil Sibal mentioned the pleas before the three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde. The bench, also comprising Justices BR Gavai and Surya Kant, decided to club all the petitions challenging the validity of the Act and hear them on Wednesday.

More than 10 separate petitions have already been filed in the Supreme Court against the Act. Senior Assam Congress leaders have reportedly filed a petition in the apex court. AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi and Congress’ Lok Sabha lawmaker from Thrissur, Kerala, TN Prathapan also filed separate petitions.

Meanwhile, the powerful North East Student’s Organisation Monday filed a petition in Supreme Court seeking stay and implementation of the CAA.
