Militant, armed gang member held with arms

Security has been stepped up across Manipur, particularly in valley districts well ahead of the Independence Day celebrations.
In the cordon search operations conducted in the last two days, police have arrested a militant and a member of armed gang along with arm and ammunitions, an official source said Tuesday.
The militant identified as Nongjai Mayum Asik (35), a member of outlaw Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) was arrested by a team of police commandos attached with Imphal West district police during a cordon and search operation at Lamdeng Khunou under Lamphel police station.
A small arm along with incriminating documents were recovered from the militant, who, the police alleged, is an active member of KCP.
In another cordon and search operation at Lilong Nungei on Monday, police commandos attached with Thoubal district police arrested an alleged armed gang member identified as Md Zamir Hussain (35).
A Chinese made 9mm pistol with a magazine loaded with two rounds, one single barrel gun, one double barrel gun, two scooters and some incriminating articles were recovered, the police said.
The cordon and search operations were conducted as part of Manipur police’s effort to thwart any untoward incident and to ensure smooth celebration of Independence Day.
The police have been carrying out mopping operations at various parts of the valley districts since the last few days.
Mopping operations were also conducted at various selected places in the four valley districts- Imphal East, Imphal West, Thoubal and Bishnupur districts, a senior police officer said.
In the operation conducted by the police commandos in Imphal East district at Mahabali Kabui Khul and Guru Aribam Leikai on Tuesday, police verified around 840 people of age ranging from 15 to 60.
Of the 840 people verified, six females and five males who could not produce valid documents to establish their identities were detained and handed over to Porompat police station for further necessary legal procedures.
In an operation conducted at Nagamapal Khwai Bhramapur Leikai in Imphal West district, police verified as many as 150 people including non-locals staying at rented houses. No suspicious person was detained during the operation, the police said.
Random frisking and checking operations were also conducted at sensitive places, the source said.
The security measure has been taken up as there was possibility of rebel groups and anti-social elements carrying out violent activities on or before the Independence Day celebration.
