Manipur fisheries minister N Kayisii on Monday encouraged fish farmers of Senapati district to become the leading fish producer in the state.

The minister was speaking at the 1st Fish Seed Fingerlings Mela in Senapati.

Kayisii said that about ninety percent of the population in the state consume fish and fish products.

Despite being a small department, fisheries department was tasked with a crucial responsibility of meeting these demands, he said.

He reiterated that the state was targeting self-sufficiency in fish production by eliminating fish import by 2022. Towards this end the state government has allocated Rs 1.5 crore through additional funding for promoting fish farming, he said and lauded the chief minister for his initiative to achieve the target.

He said that even though fish farming activities were mainly concentrated in the valley, hill areas too have potential for fish farming.

Among the hill districts, Senapati has the potential of becoming one of the leading fish producing districts of the state, he said, and added that the holding of Fish Seed Mela in the district will help to achieve the target to a great extent.

Citing that fish farming can be a great tool to solve unemployment and poverty, he encouraged the people to take up fish farming.

The minister also interacted with local fish farmers after the inauguration ceremony and assured all possible assistance to promising fish farmers of the district.

More than 1,60,000 good quality fish fingerlings were stockpiled by the district fishery office for the Mela.

The Fish Seed Fingerlings Mela, the first of its kind in the state, drew a huge crowd and keen participation from over 400 intending fish farmers, DLOs, community leaders, officials and staff from fisheries department.

The mela was organised by district fishery office, Senapati as part of government’s initiative towards achieving the state self-sufficiency in fish production.
