Sensitisation on indigenous pig ‘Tenyivo’

A one-day sensitisation on importance of indigenous pig, “Tenyivo” was organized by ICAR-All India Coordinated Research Project on pig, Nagaland Centre, NU-SASRD Medziphema, at NU-SASRD, Medziphema Campus, on July 17.

In a press release NU-SASRD, stated that VAS, Zunheboto, Dr. Gwazenlo Tep, dwelled on the importance of rearing pig in healthy system. 

Welcoming the participants Asst. Prof. and incharge, ICAR-AICRP on pig, Dr. M. Catherine Rutsa, stressed on importance of conservation and propagation of ‘Tenyivo’ which is decreasing rapidly in numbers. 

She further stated that Tenyivo has been a recognised breed of Indian pig with unique morphological characters, adaptability, excellent mothering ability and meat quality. 

Nagaland State technical executive incharge for Godrej Agrovet, Dr. Rüüsalie Nakhro, presented advantages of feeding godrej pellet for pigs which is economical, less wastage and users friendly, while speech on low cost housing using locally available materials was delivered by Dr. M. Catherine Rutsa during technical session on housing and sanitation of Tenyivo pig. 

Pro-vice chancellor, NU-SASRD, Medziphema campus, Prof. T. Lanusosang, in his exhortation, acknowledged the farmers for sharing their field experiences, adopting suitable management system, supporting time bound funded project to reduce poverty and hunger prevailing in the world. 

Later, he released the booklet entitled “Tenyivo – An Indigenous germ plasm of Nagaland” authored by M. Catherine Rutsa and V.Rutsa.  

Pure breed Tenyivoto were shown to the participants as breeding stock at subsidized rate, while concentrate pig feed samples were handed to participants by the Godrej Agrovet representative, the release stated.
