The Shiv Sena, which did not attend a meeting of opposition parties called by the Congress party to discuss the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register for Citizens, today said these two measures will not be rolled out in Maharashtra.

”The Shiv Sena, Nationalist Congress Party and the Congress are together in opposing implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act in Maharashtra,” Shiv Sena’s Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut told reporters here. Raut added that the Shiv Sena did not attend the meeting called by Congress chief Sonia Gandhi due to “some miscommunication”.

Earlier on Monday, political circles in Maharashtra were abuzz with rumours that the Shiv Sena was in disagreement with its Maha Vikas Aghadi partners over implementing the CAA in the state. The party’s leader in the Lok Sabha Vinayak Raut further added to the confusion when he came on television to tell reporters that the party was not aware of any meeting by the opposition parties on the matter.

“We have not been invited for any meeting,” Raut told television channels.

By afternoon, Sanjay Raut told reporters in Mumbai that there was no difference in opinion between the Shiv Sena and the other parties of the coalition in Maharashtra.

The Shiv Sena had voted for the CAA in the Lok Sabha, but had abstained from voting after Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s criticism.
